Are GOAT Builds Worth It?

Whether NBA 2K27 GOAT Builds are worth it depends on what you value: a legend's body and feel, or full control over your own build. This page weighs the grind, the locked signature animations and the money question, then helps you pick which GOAT Build to unlock first. For the full list, see all 18 GOAT Builds.

Are GOAT Builds worth it?

Depends on what you care about. No stats are out yet, so nobody can tell you if a GOAT Build beats a solid custom build.

Here's what you can weigh right now:

  • Want a legend today? Eight GOAT Builds cost zero grind. Trying one is low risk.
  • Love your own jumper? Signature animations are locked, and the 2K Newsroom says stats are too. A custom build keeps your moves.
  • Worried about cost? You don't buy any of them. Every unlock is earned in game.

GOAT Build trade-offs at a glance

Time, flexibility and money are the three real costs. Here they are side by side.

FactorWhat we know
Time costEight are free of any grind. The three Season builds sit at Levels 26 to 37 (out of 40). The five REP builds need Elite V up to Legend I. The last two take 300 or 350 Lifetime Challenges.
Less flexibilitySignature animations are locked, and the 2K Newsroom says stats are too. If you're attached to your jumper or dribble moves, a custom build lets you keep them. 2K hasn't said if any animation slot stays open.
MoneyYou don't buy any of them. Every unlock is earned in game, and the Season GOATs aren't in the Pro Pass. 2K hasn't said if creating one or skipping levels costs VC.
Still unknownAttributes, bodies, badge limits, how Cap Breakers work past GOAT caps, and whether any mode bans GOAT Builds.

Which GOAT Build should you play first?

Pick by what you can actually get and the position you already play. We won't rank them until we can test the stats.

Any tier list out before launch is a guess. For now, match your situation:

You want one today

Grab one of the eight day-one builds:

You're leveling Season 2 anyway

These come to you as you stack Season XP. Aim for Level 26, 33 and 37.

Your REP is already high

Check your tier. Elite V gets you Ray Allen and Hakeem. Elite VIII adds Derrick Rose and Michael Jordan. Legend I adds LeBron.

You're a completionist

Anthony Edwards (300) and Wilt Chamberlain (350) are long-haul Lifetime Challenge goals. Check how many you've already cleared first.

What players are asking

The questions players ask most, answered with what's known right now. Tap a question to open it.

Does everyone get one right away, or do I have to grind?

Official Both. Eight GOAT Builds are open to everyone on day one, no grind. The other ten sit behind Season levels, REP tiers or Lifetime Challenges.

Is this a cash grab? Do I need to buy VC?

TBA 2K hasn't announced a VC price, and the VC numbers going around are rumors. Every official unlock path is gameplay.

Can I cap break a GOAT Build?

Official Yes, Cap Breakers are customizable. What 2K hasn't explained yet is how they work on attributes that already go past the normal builder caps.

If signature animations are locked, can I still use animation breakers or swap my jumper?

TBA Signature animations are locked. 2K hasn't said whether any animation slots stay open. If your jumper matters most, a custom build keeps it.

Do I get the legend's face or my own face scan?

TBA 2K hasn't said.

How long does Elite V, Elite VIII, Legend I or 300 Lifetime Challenges take?

TBA 2K hasn't given a time estimate. It depends on where your REP sits now and how many Lifetime Challenges you've already cleared. Check both in game, then track the rest with the checklist on the unlock page.

Why do Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards and Klay get GOAT Builds?

Official 2K calls GOAT Builds recreations of past and present stars, not an all-time top 18. So the list mixes legends with current players.

Should I pay a service to finish Lifetime Challenges?

Community reports No. We don't recommend or link paid boosting services. They can get your account in trouble.

Are GOAT Builds worth it? FAQ

Are GOAT Builds worth it in NBA 2K27?

It depends on what you want. If you're after a legend's body and feel without building from scratch, the eight day-one builds cost no grind at all. If you care most about your own jumper and dribble moves, a custom build keeps them; signature animations are locked on GOAT Builds. Nobody can say yet whether a GOAT Build beats a strong custom build, because 2K hasn't shown attributes.

Which GOAT Build should I unlock first?

Start with the day-one build at the position you already play. Then let the Season builds (Magic at Level 26, Dirk at 33, Young Kobe at 37) come to you while you level, and chase REP or Lifetime Challenge builds only if you're already close.

Are GOAT Builds a money grab?

You don't buy any GOAT Build. Every official unlock is earned in game, and the Season GOATs aren't in the Pro Pass. 2K hasn't said whether creating one or skipping Season levels costs VC, so any VC prices you see are rumors.

Can you use Cap Breakers on GOAT Builds?

Yes. The Courtside Report says you keep full access to customize Badges, Cap Breakers and Takeovers. 2K hasn't said how far Cap Breakers can push each GOAT attribute yet.

Can you change the stats of a GOAT Build?

Probably not. The 2K Newsroom says animations and stats are locked, but the Courtside Report only mentions signature animations. Plan around fixed attributes and tune Badges, Cap Breakers and Takeovers instead.

Can you use GOAT Builds in The REC, Pro-Am or Park?

2K hasn't said whether any mode is off-limits. If you run a Pro-Am league, check your league's own rules.

Will more GOAT Builds be added?

Probably, but 2K hasn't given a number. A pre-launch leak claimed more players in later seasons, and 2K hasn't confirmed it.
